Tom Silk, pioneer in our field, 1937-2022

Fiscal sponsorship has lost a giant of our sector, Tom Silk, who died Jan. 25. In 1981, Silk founded Adler & Colvin, a firm whose early work pioneered best practices in nonprofit, tax-exempt law and whose knowledge of the field, carried on by Silk’s successors, remains vast.

Greg Colvin, Silk’s decades-long law partner, has just posted a personal remembrance of his friend and colleague — “a bright spirit” — on his website.

And on a recent Zoom forum of fiscal sponsors nationwide, Colvin, who retired from Adler & Colvin in 2019, told the group that Silk was “a mentor to me and an inspiration for how to get these things done.”
